Your Moving Questions, Answered
Free, No-Obligation Estimate
What Houston movers field most often: cost, Heights bungalows, high-rise and COI moves, parking permits, deposits, and just how moving day plays out.
Questions We Hear a Lot
What will my move cost?
Two things drive it: the size of the load and how easy the access is. Book a truck with two movers and the rate opens at $125/hr, with a written line-item estimate in your hands before the first box moves. Need a firm ceiling? Ask for a flat cap and the figure you sign is as high as the bill can go. When the move crosses state lines, we price it on weight and distance instead.
My Heights bungalow has a tight 1920s staircase. Is that a problem?
This is exactly what we do best. Those vintage bungalows in the Heights, Woodland Heights, and Norhill are raised on piers, with steep front steps, narrow doorways, and cramped boxed-in stairwells. We size up every turn, pad the jambs and railings, and lift or hand-carry whatever refuses to make the corner, just as we have done since 1993.
Can you do high-rise moves that need a certificate of insurance?
Yes, constantly. High-rises near the Galleria, Midtown, the Museum District, and the Medical Center expect a certificate of insurance on file and a freight elevator reserved for a set window. We submit the COI to building management, hold the elevator, pad the cab and hallways, and finish inside the booked slot so you are off the dock on time.
Parking is tight and there is no driveway. Can you still do it?
No trouble at all, and we do it on most Montrose, Heights, and inner-loop jobs. Hand us the address at booking and we arrange the truck spot, the loading zone, or the apartment dock, then shape the carry to fit whatever the street gives us. Our crew shows up planning to load straight from the curb rather than a driveway.
When does billing start?
Timing starts when the crew begins working at your door, not the second we leave the yard. After that first hour the meter runs by the minute, so seventy minutes is billed as seventy minutes and never bumped up to a flat two hours. Before a single box is lifted, we lay out the crew rate and how travel time is counted.
Do you take a deposit?
Only a small refundable one to hold your date, and it comes straight off your final total as a credit, so it is never money lost. Cancel with a couple of days’ notice and you get every cent back. All of it is written into your booking from the start.
How and when do I pay?
Nothing is owed until the job is finished, not one minute before. All the major cards are welcome, along with check and cash. Right at your door, before the crew leaves, you review the final total with them and sign off on it.
Are tips expected?
Not at all, and we never quietly add one to the invoice. If a crew truly earns it, plenty of customers give ten to fifteen percent for the team to share, by cash or card, but the decision is completely yours.
Is there anything you won’t load?
Only a short list, and it all comes down to safety and the law: propane, gasoline, paint, and anything flammable, along with ammunition, houseplants, perishable food, and pets. Got something oversized, extra heavy, or especially valuable? Flag it when you book so we bring the right crew and equipment.
Are you licensed and insured?
We are. Vickers Moving Service carries Texas household-goods authority and full insurance, and your job stays with our own crew start to finish, with no broker slipping in to grab a cut. We are glad to walk you through the authority numbers and coverage details, and we will review your valuation options before anything is locked in.
What if a piece gets damaged?
Thorough padding keeps it rare, but should something take a hit, we record it on the spot and start the claim that same afternoon. Before the job we go over released versus full-value coverage, so you know exactly how any claim would work out.
How far ahead should I book?
For a standard local move, one or two weeks of notice usually covers it. Month-end and the height of summer fill up fast, so target three or four weeks then, and add a little extra for a Saturday. Openings do pop up last minute, though, so it never hurts to give us a quick call.
Can you move pianos, gun safes, and pool tables?
Yes, and our crew handles them week after week. Upright or grand, a loaded gun safe, a slate pool table, a family heirloom, or a framed canvas, every one rides the right board or dolly under proper straps and pads, and we build a custom crate any time a piece needs one.
Will you handle the packing?
As much or as little as you want. Want the whole house boxed? Done. Just the kitchen and the artwork? That is fine too. We arrive with heavy-duty cartons and paper, mark every box by room, and once the truck is empty we will unpack you at the new place.
Do you move out of state?
Yes, and we keep your load on a single truck with the same crew from pickup to drop-off. It is never brokered out, never shuffled into a stranger’s trailer at some depot, and you get a delivery window you can actually build plans around.
Do you have storage?
We do. Whether it is a brief gap between closings or several months before the next place is ready, your belongings sit in a clean, locked space with every item logged. Our own crew carries it in and later back out, so you never rent a truck twice.
I’m moving to Houston from out of town. Can you help?
Absolutely, a good chunk of our work is people moving into the city, many of them here for the energy companies or the Texas Medical Center. We set the delivery window, meet you at the new place, and take care of the parking, the building COI, or the freight elevator on our side. Your belongings travel on our truck with our crew, and they are never auctioned off to whoever underbids that week.
Can I move or cancel my date?
Of course. Reschedule or cancel with at least two days’ notice and your full deposit comes back to you. Every condition is written into your booking in plain words, so nothing is left to guesswork.
